After 45 years of operation the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) replaces the Philips Cryogenics (Stirling’s predecessor) PLN-430 with a new StirLIN-4.
In 1958, the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC, for its acronym in Spanish) bought a PLA-107, from Philips Cryogenics (a 1-cylinder with a liquid air production rate of 5 l/h).
Due to the fast growth of the research activities at the institute, by the end of the 60s, the PLA-107 (reconfigured for liquid nitrogen in 1961) was not enough to meet the demand.
In 1970, the institute got a new PLN-430 of 4 cylinders with a liquid nitrogen production rate of 25 l/h. Since then, the PLN-430 served more than 15 research laboratories at the different departments of the institute dedicated to Cellular Biology, Medicine, Virology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Ecology, Chemistry and Physics.
This nitrogen system at IVIC also served other scientific institutions and universities located in the metropolitan area of Caracas, and some livestock companies outside Caracas.
Last year the institute decided to replace the old PLN-430 with a new StirLIN-4. This system has been installed in the summer of 2015.
