On the island of La Palma, on the 2.426 m high Roque de Los Muchachos, the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) was inaugurated in 1985. Since then they have been using Stirling Cryogenics liquid nitrogen system to locally produce LN2.
At the ING, LN2 is used for several applications, the main usage being for CCD cameras. Situated on an island as well as on a mountain top, logistics of LN2 are complicated. ING has therefore produced its own LN2 from the beginning, using StirLIN systems from Stirling Cryogenics.
With the number of telescopes expanding over the years, the usage of LN2 has grown as well resulting in the expansion of production capacity. The first system was expanded in capacity and a second StirLIN system was installed a number of years later.
